Advancing access, equity, and self-empowerment in sexual health for the Blind Community.
Sexual health is essential to overall well-being, but too often, blind individuals are left out of these conversations. We’re here to change that.
At the Blind Sexuality Access Network (BSAN), we use a public health framework called health promotion to advance equity and access in all areas of sexuality. Health promotion empowers communities to create environments that support self-empowerment, access, and well-being.
Led by blind individuals, our diverse team includes blindness professionals, educators, public health and sexual health specialists, mental health providers, disability justice advocates, and people with lived experiences. Together, we focus on removing barriers, expanding access, and fostering inclusion through community-based research, education, and advocacy.
Whether you’re a blind person seeking connection, a parent or caregiver looking for resources, an educator working to improve accessibility, or an advocate for inclusivity, you have a role in this work.
Join us in creating a future where sexual health is accessible, inclusive, and empowering for all.
Our Aspiration, Mission, and Values
Aspirational Statement
BSAN envisions a world where blindness and the barriers of ableism do not hinder individuals from embracing their sexuality.
We aspire to lead a cultural shift that challenges stereotypes, promotes inclusivity, and normalizes open discussions about comprehensive sexual health within the Blind Community.
Our ultimate goal is to empower blind individuals to lead fulfilling lives where sexual well-being is integral to their overall health, safety, and happiness, contributing to a society that values and celebrates the intersection of identity, sexuality, accessibility, and consent.
Mission Statement
The Blind Sexuality Access Network (BSAN) is dedicated to advancing accessible sexual health education, community-led research, and advocacy for blind individuals.
Through a sexual health promotion framework, we foster inclusivity and empowerment within the Blind Community. Our mission is to ensure that every blind individual has access to comprehensive, evidence-based sexual health resources, can engage in informed discussions, and navigate their sexuality and well-being with dignity, safety, and autonomy.
We are committed to promoting a culture of consent and self-empowerment within the Blind Community.
Our Values
Accessibility
Accessibility is at the heart of everything we do.
We prioritize the needs and voices of blind communities, ensuring that sexual health resources, education, and advocacy are accessible and inclusive. We are committed to breaking down physical, informational, and social barriers to ensure that blind individuals can navigate their sexual lives with dignity, safety, and full agency.
Autonomy
Autonomy is at the heart of everything we do.
BSAN is committed to fostering environments where blind individuals have the power to make decisions about their bodies, relationships, and sexual experiences, free from coercion, bias, or ableism.
We champion the principles of autonomy—the right and responsibility of each person to define and decide for themselves—and agency—the right and responsibility to act on their own behalf.
We are committed to creating equitable, accessible environments where blind individuals are empowered to make informed decisions, ensuring they have the tools and respect needed to thrive.
Blindness Positivity
Blindness positivity is at the heart of everything we do.
We celebrate blindness as an intrinsic part of identity, recognizing the strengths, capabilities, and diverse experiences of blind individuals.
By challenging ableist assumptions, we strive to create a culture of pride and empowerment where blind individuals can embrace their sexuality fully and confidently.
Inclusivity
Inclusivity is at the heart of everything we do.
BSAN is dedicated to creating a safe and welcoming space where all blind individuals, regardless of gender, sexual orientation, or background, feel seen, heard, and valued.
Inclusivity means recognizing the diverse experiences within the Blind Community and advocating for their full participation in sexual health education, research, and advocacy.
Informed Consent
Informed consent is at the heart of everything we do.
Informed consent is foundational to sexual health, safety, and pleasure.
At BSAN, we work to ensure that blind individuals have access to clear, accurate, and accessible information, enabling them to make informed decisions about their sexual lives.
We are committed to advancing research on blindness and sexuality, promoting a culture where consent is understood, mutual, and respected in every interaction.
Sexual Positivity
Sexual positivity is at the heart of everything we do.
BSAN promotes a healthy, open, and accepting attitude toward sexuality, emphasizing that sexuality is a natural part of being human.
We reject shame and stigma, advocating for the freedom of blind individuals to explore their sexual identities and desires without judgment.
Sexual positivity means embracing diverse expressions of sexuality and ensuring that everyone has the opportunity to experience sexual pleasure, safety, and well-being.
