BSAN Review, written by Laura Millar, co-founder of BSAN
Children do not owe anyone hugs or kisses. I recommend this book for young children and the parents, caregivers, and early childhood educators reading with them. Its strength is making consent understandable through everyday affection. The lesson belongs to adults as much as children: asking matters, and so does respecting the answer.
For blind and disabled children, that message has particular relevance. Needing guidance, assistance, or personal care does not erase a child’s boundaries. This book gives adults a useful opening to talk about asking before touching, explaining what will happen, and taking a child’s response seriously.
The story is written for a general audience and is available in print and Braille through National Braille Press. I’m giving it six dots because it combines a strong foundation in bodily autonomy with a format blind children and blind parents can share. It’s a simple, useful book for families building consent into everyday life.
