Relationships and Sexuality Education for Students with Vision Impairment: A Handbook for Educators
Handbook rating
BSAN Review, written by Laura Millar, co-founder of BSAN
A useful, practical handbook for educators teaching blind and low-vision students about bodies, relationships, consent, and sexual health. Its suggestions for tactile models, verbal descriptions, and accessible materials give teachers concrete ways to make learning more inclusive.
I appreciate the work behind this resource. Members of what is now the Blind Sexuality Access Network participated when we were the Blind Positive Sex Ed Team. Although the consent activity is attributed to me in the handbook, Bobbi Pompey and I developed it together while working with youth during the youth employment series at the LightHouse for the Blind in San Francisco.
The half-dot deduction reflects guidance that sometimes treats sighted body-language conventions as the goal. Educators can explain eye contact, facial expressions, and other social cues while respecting blind students’ ways of communicating. Understanding a convention should give children another option, without making conformity a condition of belonging.
This handbook offers a valuable starting point. Use it to build students’ knowledge, confidence, curiosity, and freedom to make their own choices.
